On Friday, we stopped in Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub for a snack of sweet potato fries after our walking tour of Portland's Underground. On Saturday we returned to Kells for lunch. (It was like a mini return to the Emerald Isle for us, so, we did a re-do.) The decorations and music are so authentic its hard to remember you are in Portland, Oregon and not Dublin, Ireland. However, we noticed dollar bills folded and attached to the ceiling, and that was new to us. On the second visit, Jay asked the significance and we learned that they are called "Irish Magnets", held to the ceiling with a wee bit of Irish magic. Apparently, on St. Patrick's Day, the money is removed from the ceiling, the owners match the amount collected from the ceiling, and donate all the money to the Providence Child Center. We loved the idea, so we made a donation. A young lady came to our table and demonstrated the Irish Magnet with our donation. She also told us, when they collect the money from the ceiling, the children from the hospital are there with umbrellas to enjoy the "Irish Rain". I hope you will consider going to Kells and adding a raindrop or two - or three. Who knows. Together, we might create a rainbow.
