I do not have to tell you that I am a sucker for those close, intimate, detail shots of a subject. I do believe that most images are better when you zoom in with your feet. By that I mean physically getting closer to your subject. A closer perspective often lets you discover details you may have entirely missed. It also allows you to just focus on the subject. When you take this approach of focusing on the subject, it is like those rare conversations where the person you are sharing a conversation

I have shared with you all how much I have come to enjoy journaling. I haven’t always maintained a journaling practice, but a few years ago, I started regularly writing. I think one of the things that helped me turn this into a regular practice is that I begin my morning with three questions. One of the questions is to list at least three things I am grateful about. Read MoreSeveral years ago, I watched a documentary that has fascinated me, and haunted me for years. The 2011 documentary, directed by Trisha Ziff is The Mexican Suitcase. It tells the story of the recovery of over 4,000 film negatives of the Spanish Civil War captured by photographers Robert Capa, Gerda Toro, and David 'Chim' Seymore. The negatives were considered lost since 1939 so their discovery in a suitcase in Mexico in 2007 is quite the story. I know the documentary is available to rent through Amazon, and is well worth the rental fee.
Read MoreSeptember 16 was the birthday of Jack Cardiff. Cardiff was a painter, photographer, and movie director, but he is probably best known for cinematography. If you love the visual lushness of old Technicolor movies, chances are good that cinematographer Jack Cardiff was probably responsible.
Cardiff’s career began as a young boy in the silent film days (certainly no Technicolor back then) and rose through the film making ranks for the next fifty years, ultimately receiving an Honorary Oscar in 2001 for his contribution to cinema.
